Can't afford to overlook anything
Client said ... "We updated a bunch of content on our website and some site structure to improve our local seo, but the site rankings have fallen off a cliff. Organic traffic is down 80% We don't know what we did."
Great example of the things that impact SEO. After a opening review of "what they knew" we got access to Google Analytics and it turns out the traffic started falling 3 weeks before the content changes. Their "virtual dedicated" hosting had 1,700 websites on one IP address. One was very bad.
Moved their site to a business class hosting environment with all the expected accoutrements, including an IP address they do not share with anyone else. Traffic is increasing daily. We didn't spend all their budget.
"New website is ready to go live just add the SEO"
We usually avoid projects where the company has a new website "completed and ready to go" but they want to "add the SEO". For a friend of a friend, we agreed to help out. We found a beautiful new website with content spread around willy nilly. Fortunately the client understood our concerns.
We started with Keyword Research and Competitor Research to identify a potential pool of keywords. We then matched that against the competitor strengths and weaknesses. After a brainstorming session, we built a page structure based on content and keyword, then assigned the content to the pages.
After the web team realigned the content, the site went live. After 60 days the site was ranking well against the competitors, even ranking higher in a few of the obscure weak spots. Six months after go live, there were 2 top ten, 4 top 20 and a single obscure keyword that we got to rank FIRST.
